June Ohnstad

A memorial service for June Ohnstad of Wanamingo was held Tuesday June 13th at 1:00 PM ., with visitation one hour prior to the service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo. The Rev. Kris Ferkin officiated. The visitation was held on Monday June 12th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at the church. Burial was in the Zumbrota Cemetery. Mrs. Ohnstad, 92, died Friday June 2, 2023, at her home and just a few hours prior to her 93rd birthday.

June Harriet Banitt was born June 3, 1930 in rural Zumbrota, the daughter of August and Lilly (Brunckhorst) Banitt. Raised near Zumbrota, she was a graduate of Zumbrota High School. She worked as a nurses’ aide at the Zumbrota Hospital, and it was there that she met Ernest Ohnstad. The couple married on June 3, 1958. Following the marriage, Mrs. Ohnstad was a homemaker until 1975, when she briefly returned to working at the Zumbrota Hospital, and then at the Zumbrota Nursing Home, from which she retired in the mid-1990s.

She enjoyed embroidering, gardening, camping, and baking. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

June is survived by her children, Stephen Ohnstad of Wanamingo, Janet (Dan) Roraff of Owatonna, Daniel (Jennifer) Ohnstad of Goodhue, and Julie (Matthew) Drewitz of Mankato; thirteen grandchildren, Rebecca Walters, Angela Buytart, Joel Ohnstad, Samuel Ohnstad, Isaac Ohnstad, Reed Roraff, Nathan Ohnstad, Elijah Ohnstad, Katy Ohnstad, Nicole Ohnstad, Jack Drewitz, Abraham Ohnstad, and Elisabeth Ohnstad; and fifteen great- grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister-in-law Mary Banitt. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ernest, brother, LeRoy Banitt, brother, August Banitt, sister, Violet (Elmer) Stiller, sister Eileen (Leonard) Groth, sister Lucille (Clarence) Mehrkens and nieces and nephews.
